In
the 1970's I spent time in Afghanistan. I collected ethnic jewelry
and learned many interesting and useful craft techniques. One
of my favorite finds was the Afghan “zangola” or tassel.
The zangolas are made of mixtures of metals and are usually pretty
old. Sometimes they make sounds when you shake them----perhaps
to ward off evil spirits, or to announce the arrival of the wearer.
I have seen them on clothes, horses, cars and even buses. I like
to put them on keychains along with heavy gauge silver wire and
strong unbreakable beads. I have loved making these keychains
for over 30 years. Each one is different. |
